Because the high pressure sodium lamp was developed before the advent of modern electronic ignitors for lamp ignition, many early products had to contain an internal means of ignition so that they could be operated in existing circuits.
These internal ignitors take one of two forms - the first employed a heavy duty glowbottle starter across the arc tube, operating in just the same way as a fluorescent starter switch. However due to the higher lamp currents, these often fail by welding together the contacts. Osram-GEC greatly improved the design with the invention of the so-called snap switch. However both methods rely on moving components and frequently fail prematurely, often short-circuiting the ballast and burning out its windings. Thus internal ignitor lamps have been largely phased out recently.
By contrast Japan has reverted some 90% of its installations to internal ignitor lamps, and over 70% of these use Iwasaki's novel FEC ignitor. The heart of the system is the "Ferro-Electric Capacitor", a disc of barium titanate material invented by Iwasaki engineer Takenobu Iida - the first capacitor capable of enduring the temperatures in a lamp outer bulb. By combining this with a ceramic resistor and a "sidac" semiconductor, a high voltage electronic ignitor is created inside the lamp. Because there are no moving parts, its reliability is unsurpassed. This advanced development makes lamp ignition far more reliable and the removal of the ignitor from the external circuit offers numerous advantages such as lower system cost, smaller luminaires, reduced electrode wear, and no restriction on distance between lamp and gear. |
